The Joint Australia
Calling Australia Home - Stories of Migration and Community
Share your STORIES OF MIGRATION AND COMMUNITY with Us
Welcome to our story-collecting space. We are reaching out to people in Melbourne so that we can gather and record experiences and stories of those helped by the Joint Jewish Distribution Committee - today known as The Joint or JDC.
Over seventy years ago, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), or The Joint as it is more widely known, established historic and personal ties with the Australian Jewish community through the Executive Council of Australia Jewry (ECAJ) and the Australian Jewish Welfare Society (known today as Jewish Care). This unique partnership enabled The Joint and the Australian Jewish community to work together to resettle tens of thousands of Holocaust survivors who found themselves stateless with nowhere to go after the war. The Joint provided these refugees with safe passage to their new land and the support and wherewithal to rebuild their lives in Australia.
In fact, between 1946 and 1954, some 20,000 Jewish refugees arrived in Australia from Europe and Shanghai, and The Joint was involved in every aspect of this migration program. From financing their resettlement, which included providing hostel accommodations, English classes and employment assistance, to offering interest-free loans for establishing businesses.
As part of this project we are asking people to share their stories of The Joint with us. Maybe you were helped by The Joint or perhaps a member of your family was - a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or even friend. We would love to hear your story. We have created this space to make it easy for you to share and record your story. Please fill in the form below and share your experiences or family memories with us.
Thanks for sharing your stories of The Joint with us. All stories will be collected by the team at Way Back When and as per your permission above, will be used for this project and/or passed on to The Joint.
