WORK IN PROGRESS

History of the Nurses Board of Victoria 1974–2010

The history of the Nurses Board of Victoria dates back to 1923 with the establishment of a body to endorse state registration of trained nurses. The NBV today registers over 89,700 nurses and midwives in Victoria and regulates nurse education and training. In July 2010 the Nurses Board of Victoria will cease to exist in its current form as it transitions to become part of the newly-established National Registration for health professionals.

At this point of organisational change, the NBV aims to honour the organisation’s rich and dynamic past by producing a history of the NBV in its various forms. Celebrating the NBV’s contribution to and involvement in the regulation of the nursing and midwifery profession, the publication will acknowledge and commemorate the proud tradition and historical significance of nursing and midwifery regulation in Victoria.

Australian Lesbian & Gay Archives
Significance Assessment

Way Back When is currently working with the Australian Lesbian & Gay Archives Association (ALGA) to carry out a significance assessment of their vast collection. The ALGA collection, which began in the 1970s, documents and preserves many different aspects of gay life in Australia both during and after the gay liberation era of the 1970s. Items in the collection include photographs, newspaper clippings, oral histories and scrapbooks. The completed significance assessment will hopefully enable ALGA to explore further avenues of support and resource funding for its remarkable and unique collection.
