Annie’s War is a children’s book that explores what life was like for seven-year-old Annie Slade and her family in Kew during World War I. The book was commissioned by the City of Boroondara using a Commonwealth Government Armistice Centenary Grant. Way Back When was approached to write this book after working with the City of Boroondara in 2015 on the publication Boroondara Remembers. Annie’s War incorporates much of the research we uncovered during Boroondara Remembers and revisits the story of one of the case studies in the book, Edward Slade. We worked closely with Edward’s granddaughter and Annie’s daughter, Isabel Harkensee, throughout the process of creating this book. Beautifully illustrated, the book also includes historic photographs, a detailed timeline, glossary, and readers’ notes, to assist teachers and parents in exploring the themes of armistice, war and peace.
